Prepare your jaw for dental implants

Bone grafting helps to increase bone density in your jaw. When a tooth is extracted, there is the risk that the bone and gum will shrink and recede. Bone grafting helps to maintain the shape of the jaw to avoid the sunken appearance. Bone grafting may be recommended before dental implants to provide sufficient bone density.

    When is bone grafting required?

A bone graft may be required after a tooth extraction to help maintain the facial structure. When a tooth is extracted, this can cause the bone and gum to shrink, which puts the surrounding teeth at risk. A bone graft will help to maintain jawbone density. A bone graft may also be needed to prepare the site for dental implants. Bone grafting helps to ensure the implants have a secure foundation.

      More Questions?

Placing a bone graft after an extraction is a good idea if you are planning to replace the missing tooth with dental implants. It’s also recommended if you are concerned about your facial structure changing after tooth loss.
We offer a number of choices, including Bio-Oss from bovine sources and bone material reallocated from the wisdom tooth area. We will discuss options with you during a consultation.
A bone graft doesn’t hurt any more than a tooth extraction. Your pain will be managed throughout the procedure with local anaesthetic. After the procedure, we recommend using paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage your pain.
Recovery time can take from two weeks to two months. This will depend on the number of bone grafts required and the location. We will advise you on what to expect during your consultation so you can be fully prepared.

      How does denture stabilisation work?

To stabilise your dentures, we use 4 – 6 dental implants per arch to create a strong anchor. Dental implants are small titanium screws that are placed in the jaw where they fuse with the bone. Once healed, an abutment is placed on top of the implant and this will hold your chosen attachment. Magnetic attachments allow for removable dentures, while screws can provide a fixed solution.

      dental-teeth-2

Who is a good candidate for denture stabilisation?

For denture implants to be successful, you will need to have sufficient bone density. If you don’t have sufficient bone density, don’t worry. There is the option to use bone grafting to build up the volume in your jaw. You should also be in good overall health, a non-smoker and willing to take good care of your dentures. We will outline the procedure and aftercare requirements during your consultation.

        More Questions?

Yes, the dentures are firmly fixed in place so you can sleep with them in and only remove them for cleaning. Fixed dentures are also an option.
Typically 4 – 6 implants are used per arch to provide a strong anchor for your denture. Your denture may be fixed or removable, depending on your preferences.
Provided you care for your oral health and attend regular checkups, your restoration could last 20+ years. The implants should not need to be replaced, but your denture may suffer from wear over time.
The actual procedure is quite short, and might take as little as 1 – 2 hours. Dental implants are typically placed over multiple appointments to give the implants time to fuse with the jaw bone.

When is All-on‑4 the best option?

If you are missing multiple or all teeth on an arch, All-on‑4 dental implants offer the chance of a complete and permanent restoration. Missing teeth and poorly-fitting dentures can impact your quality of life by making it difficult to eat, speak or smile with confidence. All-on‑4 dental implants offer a second chance, with same-day restorations available in certain circumstances.

        dental-teeth-2

        The All-on‑4 treatment journey

The dental implant procedure involves placing small titanium screws in your jaw bone. The screws fuse with your bone and provide an anchor for a full arch restoration. A temporary set of resin teeth may be placed the same day in certain circumstances. These will be replaced with a permanent porcelain denture once your implants have fully healed.

          More Questions?

In general, if you have good oral health but are missing multiple teeth on an arch, you could be an excellent candidate for All-on‑4 implants.
Your journey to a full arch restoration begins with a consultation. During this consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jaw. They will take digital scans and X‑rays to help determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. You will also have the chance to ask questions about the procedure. If you are a suitable candidate for All-on‑4 dental implants, we will prepare a comprehensive treatment plan, including payment options.
With the right care and regular checkups, your dental implants could last for 20+ years with the right care. The implant posts should never need to be replaced, but the denture may need to be replaced or repaired over time.
Yes! Once the restoration is complete, your porcelain denture will look and feel just like natural teeth. Since the force of your bite is distributed across your jaw and not your gums, your dentures will also feel more natural.

          Why choose white fillings?

The main benefit of white fillings is that they are more discreet than dark metal fillings. Dental amalgam has long been the favourite choice for filling a tooth after a cavity as they are strong and durable. Advances in dental materials mean that composite resin used for white fillings is now just as durable and long-lasting.

          • Matched to your tooth colour
          • No sensitivity to hot and cold
          • Replace metal fillings
          • Discreet filling restoration

Match your fillings to your smile

We can match the colour of your fillings to surrounding teeth, making it a discreet option for restoring teeth after a cavity. Composite resin fillings do not contain any metal, so they won’t contract or expand when they come into contact with hot or cold substances. This means you will have less sensitivity..

          Replacing amalgam fillings

If you’re not happy with your existing amalgam filings, we can remove and replace the material with composite resin. This simple step can transform your smile and make you feel more confident about your teeth. We can also use Porcelain Fillings (Inlays made by the laboratory) in teeth which have large restorations and need strengthening.

          What is a dental bridge?

Bridges are used to replace missing teeth, using the surrounding teeth as an anchor. A dental bridge offers a simple way to restore your smile in just two visits. If you’re self-conscious about gaps in your teeth, this is a simple and effective way to restore function and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting.

          • Look and function like real teeth
          • Smile and laugh with confidence
          • Eat your favorite foods again
          • Hard-wearing and long-lasting solution

          The dental bridge procedure

Dental Bridges are an alternative to partial dentures or dental implants and can be used to replace one or several missing teeth in a row. Crowns are placed on the teeth on either side of the gap and false teeth are used to fill the gap joining the crowns together. The teeth either side of the gap must be strong enough and healthy enough to support the bridge.

Following an extraction, you may need to wait 4 – 6 months for the gum to heal before a bridge can be fitted. We can fit a temporary denture while you wait for your bridge restoration.

          What is root canal therapy?

Root canal treatment is required when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected because of tooth decay or injury. The infection can spread through the root canal system and could lead to an abscess which can cause extreme discomfort. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time consuming procedure and will normally require you to attend for two or more visits to ensure a successful outcome.

          • Less uncomfortable that an extraction
          • Helps to preserve your natural teeth
          • Less costly that a denture, implant or bridge
          • Restore your smile with a crown

          The root canal procedure

The length of the procedure will depend on the complexity of the tooth root. In general, you can expect the following treatment journey:

          • A local aesthetic will be given to ensure that you do not experience and pain during treatment
          • The tooth will be opened to access the root canal system
          • The root canal system will be thoroughly cleaned to remove infection
          • The root canal system will be filled and temporarily sealed
          • Once the tooth has settled the tooth will be permanently filled and crowned
